Masks will be mandatory indoors in Victoria from 11:59pm tonight for people aged eight years and over, in a rule which applies to all indoor settings except private homes.
Acting Premier James Merlino stated that people also need to wear masks when walking in large events with more than 30,000 people, but not when they are sitting outdoors.
Health Minister Martin Foley said that the authorities also recommend that hospitality venues stick to seating services as much as possible, and keep the dance floor in an outdoor, well-ventilated area.
Mr. Merlino said that due to the high vaccination rate, Victoria is one of the “strongest” positions in the world against new variants.
However, he said it "needs to be smart" to ensure that the health system is not overwhelmed.
Mr. Merlino also advises people to work from home as much as possible during the holiday season, and to insist on sitting service in hotel premises instead of letting people move around.
